What do the warnings actually do

I understand that you're keeping this website as PG as you can, but what do they actually do? Why are we just taking down things for basically no reason, even if it's not venting and even if it's not explicit content? I'm just asking, not coming at you all. I just want to know. I feel like we should be able to have a safe community where people can talk freely, as long as it doesn't cross into hate speech. For sensitive topics or venting, users should just use a trigger warning. If someone fails to add a warning, their post should be taken down.
