The cheetah is a large wild cat. Cheetahs live mostly on grasslands in Africa. Over short distances, they are the fastest land animals in the world. Cheetahs can run 50 to 70 miles (80 to 110 kilometers) per hour. Cheetahs have yellowish-brown fur with black spots. They have slender bodies and long legs. Adults can be up to 36 inches (90 centimeters) tall at the shoulder. They reach 7 feet (2.1 meters) long, including the tail. They weigh up to 132 pounds (60 kilograms). Cheetahs usually hunt by day. They can run quickly enough to chase down antelope and other swift animals. Cheetahs live alone, except for mothers with young. Female cheetahs usually give birth to three to five cubs at a time. Cheetahs are in danger of dying out completely. They have been hunted for sport or for their fur. People also have destroyed much of the grasslands where cheetahs live. Cheetahs are protected by law in most of the countries where they live.
