Benni and Sky chapter Eight

E
***The escape*** Benni helped Sky gather a few essential items for Velvet, her small, worn-out backpack and a favorite toy. He carefully scooped up Velvet, holding her securely against his chest. As he stood, he looked at Dove, who was now watching from the couch, her eyes a mix of defiance and exhaustion. He didn't say a word, just turned and walked out, Sky following closely behind him. Once they were in Benni's car and safely away from the chaos, Sky's body seemed to relax. She leaned her head back against the seat, a long, weary sigh escaping her lips. "Thank you," she said, her voice full of emotion. "You don't need to thank me," Benni said, pulling her hand into his and lacing their fingers together. "You're my family now, and that's what family does." ***A new beginning*** Benni drove them to his foster dad's house, a warm and loving home that had become Benni's own sanctuary. His foster dad, a kind, understanding man, opened the door and instantly saw the fear and exhaustion in Sky's eyes and the small, sleeping Velvet in Benni's arms. He didn't ask questions; he just welcomed them in with a quiet, knowing understanding. Over the next few weeks, Benni and Sky navigated the challenges of their new reality. They worked with Benni’s foster dad to involve child protective services, ensuring that Sky's mother got the help she needed and that Velvet remained in a safe environment. The healing process was long and difficult, and there were many times Sky retreated into herself, but Benni was always there, a constant and unwavering presence. The bookstore, the park, and the library were no longer just places for them. They were markers of their journey, symbols of their quiet, persistent love. Their story wasn't one of grand gestures or dramatic pronouncements, but of unspoken promises, shared burdens, and the quiet, steady strength of two people who chose to see and protect each other in a world that had once overlooked them both.
