***The decision*** Benni walked over to the sisters, his every step deliberate and steady. He lowered himself to the floor, placing a hand on Sky's shoulder. She leaned into his touch, her body trembling with fear and relief. "I knew you'd come," she whispered, her voice so soft he almost didn't hear it. Benni looked at her and knew what he had to do. He looked at Velvet, sleeping soundly and oblivious to the storm around her, and then back at Sky. "You're both coming with me," he stated, his voice a low, unwavering promise. Sky's eyes widened, filled with a new kind of fear. "We can't," she whispered. "My mom—" "I don't care," Benni cut her off, his tone firm but gentle. "You and Velvet are not staying here. I'm taking you to my foster dad. He'll keep you safe." A moment of hope As if on cue, Velvet stirred, her eyes fluttering open. She looked at Benni and smiled, a small, trusting smile that broke his heart. "Benni!" she said, her voice filled with childlike innocence. Benni gently reached out and smoothed her hair, feeling a fierce need to protect this little ray of sunshine. Seeing the innocent trust in Velvet's eyes seemed to solidify Sky's resolve. She looked at Benni, her fear finally replaced with a glimmer of hope. She had spent so long fighting a lonely battle, protecting her sister, and now, for the first time, she wasn't alone.
