I like Science better #9 I have a special orange sparkly notebook with a fox on it were I keep all my secret thoughts #10 I have a secret I don’t know if I should tell anybody Gingie closed her orange sparkly notebook and stroked the cover. She liked the way the sparkles felt. she tucked the notebook in the drawer underneath her desk and piled some papers on top. Then closed the drawer. she pushed her wheely chair away from her desk and then hopped on her bed. Since her desk and bed were so close only about a few feet away she could jump from one to the other if she jumped super high. She landed with a FWUMP on her salmon bedding in a pile of stuffed animals. Most of them foxes, coyotes, dogs, and wolves. Gingie LOVES Animals in the dog family. “Lunch time!!!!!” Yelled Vivi Gingie’s little sister running into the room. “Oomph!” exclaimed Gingie as Vivi landed on her stomach. “Oops sowwy” Vivi said. “Your good...” Gingie said wincing. Vivi ran out of the room giggling. Gingie followed her out to the kitchen table where plates of leftover orange chicken sat. She climbed onto a chair and started eating quickly wanting to visit Sage the girl across the hallway in the other apartment. Her and Sage were close friends since they had lived across the hall from each other almost their whole lives. When she was done she brought her plate to the sink and yelled “Mom I’m going across the hall!” From somewhere in the apartment, her mom yelled back, “Ok honey! Be back by 3:00! You have your art camp!” “Yes Mom!” She yelled back. Gingie skipped across the hallway and knocked on Sage’s door. Sage almost immediately came to the door. “Gingie! Hi!” She exclaimed. she pulled her into the apartment and led her to her bedroom. In her room, Sage plopped onto her bed and motioned for Gingie to come sit next to her. Gingie plopped down onto the light green pastel bedding suddenly very hot. She could feel her cheeks flushing. What was wrong was she sick? When she looked over at Sage who was talking about a video she saw, her stomach did flip flops. What was wrong with her? “So, whats been going on with you?” Sage asked. “Huh? Oh, nothing much. I have my art camp again t-today.” Why was she stuttering now? “Oh that’s so cool! I always love seeing your art!” Sage responded enthusiastically. Gingie flushed. AUGH WHAT WAS WRONG?!?! “Yeah thanks.” She responded. “You okay? You look red.” Sage said. “I’m fine! all good all good.” Gingie said. “Oop look at the time! I gotta go, I’m going to be late for art camp!” Gingie said pretending to look at her watch. “Oh ok.” Sage said. “You go then!” Gingie smiled at her encouragement and felt bad leaving. “Kay, thanks bye!” Gingie said. “Bye!” Gingie rushed out as quickly as she could. “Back so soon?” her mom said as Gingie entered the apartment. “Um, yeah. Sage had to...Finish a... Project for erm... Lily’s...tea party? Yeah that.” Lily was Sage’s little sister. “Ok. Honey that’s fine. Well now that you’re here, can you pack your bag for your art camp?” Her mom asked. “Sure. Sure.” Gingie responded. She walked into her room and pulled out her crossbody bag. It had multiple pins and keychains on it and was salmon, orange, and pink. She stuffed a sketchbook, pencils, colored pencils markers a small watercolor set, 3 paintbrushes, and a few blenders in her pencil case then stuffed the pencil case in her bag. She took a bag of pretzels and some fruit snacks and put those in her bag too. Finally, she put in a mini pop-it, a mini squishy and a mochi. Her and some camp friends liked those. She zipped up her bag and hung it on her door. She was going to change for camp. She chose a big baggy t shirt with her favorite band on it, a pair of ripped jean shorts, and her long neon pink striped socks. She would wear her converse with it. She slung her bag over her shoulder and went out the door. “Mom! Let’s go! I’m going to be late!” She called. “Ok honey I’m coming!” Gingie waited impatiently by the door as her mom got her purse off the hook and put her shoes on. It seemed like her mom was taking forever. Chapter 2 Journal entry #57 Dear journal, We are in the car at the moment. we are on the way to art camp. I can’t wait until we get there. Something keeps bugging at the back of my mind. Why was I acting so weird at Sage’s house? I feel better now but I am still wondering. I wish I knew what it meant. I hope it doesn’t mean what I think it does. Anyhow, I am starting to wonder what we are doing in the art club today. I hope it’s nothing messy. I’m wearing one of my favorite shirts. When they arrived at the school, (which the art club was in) Gingie relaxed and gathered her things. “Bye mom!” Gingie blew a kiss to her mom who returned it and said, “Bye honey!” Gingie walked through the doors that she knew so well and breathed in. She headed to the art room happy and almost forgetting what happened with Sage. When she got to the art room she breathed in the scent of paint, and melting hot glue. She took her normal seat next to the window and the back counter and waited for her friends to arrive. Kai walked in first and immediately spotted Gingie. “Hi hi!” zey said as zey plopped down in zer normal seat. (Kai used neopronouns which were Zey/Zem/Zer) “Hey Kai!” Gingie responded. Kai and Gingie had known each other forever. When Kai came out to Gingie as genderfluid and using neopronouns and also pansexual, Gingie didn’t understand what that was. She asked Kai, and Kai told her, “It basically means uhm... My pronouns are no longer she/her they are Zey/Zem/Zer, and sometimes if you ask me, they are Zey/she or He/Zem, or maybe even Zer/She or they/zer. Just ask. And pansexual means I’m attracted to everyone regardless of gender! Thank you for asking!” Gingie understood after that and decided to do research to see if she was something like that. The results ended up being inconclusive and Gingie was mixed up and confused. She decided to just wait until she knew for sure or live without labels. Then, Lua walked in. Lua was Kai’s partner and used She/Her/They/It pronouns and was lesbian. Lua snuck up behind Kai and then yelled, “BOO!” “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Kai yelled jumping out of zer seat. “Sorry Kai!” Lua said. “Aw, its fine.” Kai said turning around and giving Lua a kiss. Sometimes, Gingie wondered what it would be like to have someone like Lua was to Kai or Kai was to Lua. She wondered, she wondered. “Alright class, get out your sketchbooks. We are going to start with the rough drafts of our characters today!” Miss. Pine the art teacher said. Gingie delighted and pulled out her sketchbook. Sketching was one of her specialties. She started drawing and forgot about all of her problems. Her character was a vixen (girl fox) who transformed into a girl. She got complemented on her character a lot of times and she finally felt at home. Chapter 3 Journal entry #58 Dear journal, It’s after art camp. I’m sitting in my room waiting for dinner to be ready. Ive changed into pajamas and just took a shower. I have my biggest baggiest sweatshirt on, and my coziest shorts. They have some little stains on them, but I don’t care about being fashionable at home when I’m tired and don’t have the mental capacity to make a good outfit. Anyways, dinner is ready now. Bai! Gingie shut the cover of her journal with a snap and headed to the dining room. The smell of tomato sauce sprinkled with basil wafted through the air. My mouth watered as I entered the dining room. “Honey! Hi! I just wanted to let you know, Sage and her mom and sister are coming for dinner!” My mom said. My stomach dropped. A rock was now in the pit of my stomach. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. this wasn’t happening. Sage can Not come here. Not after what happened earlier. “Honey? You ok?” Gingie’s mom asked. “Yes!” Gingie lied. “I’m gonna go change” Gingie said. She rushed to her room and found a nice babydoll top. It was maroon and had buttons on the top of it and tied in a bow at the back. She put that on. Then she found a pair of plain black pants. She put those on too. She wanted to go formal, but not too formal. She quickly blow dried her hair and brushed it till it was glossy and fell into her natural wavy hair. She yanked it into a half up and pinned in a white bow. She was done. She looked in the mirror. This was definitely NOT how she would choose to dress but... She looked almost enchanting. Her hair was glossy and perfectly wavy. Her top swished gently in the ceiling fan breeze and looked perfect with her pants. She was glowing. She quickly spritzed in some perfume she had never used. Why was she going into all this trouble for her friend? Why??? Sage normally wouldn’t have this effect on her. Something was defenently wrong. She would figure it out later. Right now, she was hungry. She went to the kitchen and sat on the couch waiting for Sage and Lily and their mom. It was hard for Gingie to resist going and eating everything. Her mouth watered. There was a knock on the door. “LILY!!!!” Screamed Vivi running into the room. She opened the door. Standing there was Sage, Lily, and their mom. “Nora! Hello! Come on in!” Gingie’s mom said pulling them into the room. “Oh, it smells fantastic in here!” Said Sage’s mom. “Oh, thank you!” Gingie’s mom said. Ugh. grownup small talk. Sage and Gingie looked at each other. Gingie just now noticed Sage’s clothes. A white lacey tank top and a jean skirt. She looked amazing. Her long and wavy brown hair was brushed to perfection. Just as Gingie’s was. Her light brown skin glowed. Gingie felt her cheeks go hot. Oh no, not again, She thought. Chapter 4 Gingie led sage to her room her heart thumping nervously. When they entered into the room, the only thing Gingie felt she could do was sit on her bed stroking one of her stuffed animals. A coyote named Knox. He was one of her most loved and used plushies. Sage sat awkwardly on Gingie’s salmon orange beanbag. “So, can we talk about earlier? You were acting a bit weird.” Sage asked. “Yeah. I know. I’m sorry.” Gingie said. “I was just stressed I think.” Gingie said. Sage took a highland cow Douglas plushie from Gingie’s bed and stroked it lovingly. “What could you possibly have been stressed about?” She asked sadly. “Do you not like hanging out with me anymore?” She asked quietly. “No! I do!” Gingie insisted. “I promise!” “Ok...” said Sage. “Gingie, I have something else to tell you.” Sage said. “It may or may not make you not like me.” “No. Nothing could ever make me not like you.” Gingie said. “Ever.” “Ok.” said Sage, taking a deep breath. “Gingie, I’m lesbian.” What. The. Actual. Frick. Chapter 5 What the heck??? Sage sat on the beanbag holding the highland cow plushie, blushing. “You hate me now. Don’t you?” Sage asked sadly. “No! Never!” Gingie said. “I’m just...” Gingie trailed off. “Just...” Sage looked down. Tears in her eyes. “Girls! Time for dinner!” Gingie’s mom called. Sage swiped at her eyes. The tears gone. The girls headed to the dining room and sat next to each other. Even after the awkwardness, neither of them wanted their moms to bombard them with stupid questions when they got home. Gingie put a helping of pasta, put a few meatballs on top, took a piece of garlic bread, and scooped some Caesar salad onto her plate. She may feel hot and tingly, but she. Was. Hungry. She took a bite of the garlic bread and sat in silence as her mom and Nora chatted it up. After dinner when everyone was helping clean up, the dishes clattered and the sink was on. Of course, Gingie’s mom decided to let them stay longer, and of course, Nora accepted. That means, Gingie and Sage have to go to Gingie’s room again and pretend nothing is going on. Gingie wants to figure out why she feels the way she does about sage. Gingie finally decide...to ask her. When they get to her room, Gingie asks Sage a very scary question. “Sage?” “Yes?” “There is something I have been wanting to ask you for a while.” “Shoot.” “Well, lately I have had a secret and a question at the same time. One of them is...” “Is what?” “Is...” “WHAT?!?! COME ON GINGIE TELL ME!” “I....may or may not like girls too!” An uncomfortable silence fills the room. “Cool.” “Cool??!!” “Yeah. What’s your question.” “Well...um...I’ve been wondering lately...Why I’ve felt the way I do around you. My cheeks get hot...and and.... my stomach flutters. I want to be around you all the time. When I look at you, I-I feel.... weird.” “Well, sounds like...” “What?” “You might have a crush on me.’ Gingie’s stomach flips and flops over and over again. Sage sits on the bed next to Gingie looking curiously at her. “I might have a crush on you too.” Gingie’s face flushed, her stomach flopped, her fingers felt tingly, and she felt lightheaded. “I-I need some time to think about it.” Gingie said nervously. “That’s alright.” Sage said. “But think about how you feel when I do this.” Sage leaned over and kissed Gingie lightly on the cheek. Gingie’s whole face goes red and hot. Sage looked at her a kindness in her eyes. Why did she have to be so cute?? Gingie thought. Why do I have to have a possible crush on my closest friend? “Sage honey! Its time to go!” Nora called. “Coming Mama!” Sage called. Gingie wondered how she was being so cool about everything. Sage...was cool.... cool is...cool.... Sage is so cool..... Gingie! Snap out of it! She thought to herself. Stop swooning over Sage! She hoped it would be easy to do. Chapter 6 Gingie laid in her bed overthinking. She had had a plan to journal that night, but it was too late. Now, she couldn’t stop think of when Sage leaned over and kissed her. Finally, she gave up and reached under her bed for her journal. She leaned over and turned on her bedside lamp. Instead of mustering words, she doodled a picture of Sage. She made it into a diagram and labeled her drawing. Pretty eyes, nice skin, beautiful clothes. Gingie wondered if she really did have a crush on Sage. She didn’t WANT to, she just did. She wanted to just stay friends with her, but she guessed it was inevitable. She looked at the finished picture and started blushing vigorously. Ugh. She would tell Sage tomorrow that she needed more time to think on it. Even though she practically knew the answer.
