So when Hermes was just born, five minutes old, he did something crazy. Apollo had these sacred cattle and Hermes was hungry, he got out to where Apollo’s cattle were, stole 50 of them, made them walk backwards so they couldn’t be traced, (i think) he killed at least one of them. Apollo eventually found out about his missing cows, then he found out it was his baby brother Hermes! He was both angry and impressed, and Hermes, knowing that his brother was going to be mad, had made the lyre, a portable harp, for him. Once Apollo confronted Hermes, Hermes gave him the lyre, and Apollo, still impressed gave him a shepherd’s staff (the first image), and later, he broke up two snakes having a fight and they crawled onto his staff (second image) This is actually one of my favorites because it’s so funny how he stole them at five minutes old, and this is actually how he became the god of thieves!
