Solar and Fawn part 5

Lily's cruelty toward Fawn had not stopped. After Solar's confrontation, it had only grown more insidious, fueled by her own humiliation. It came to a head in the crowded school hallway, a space Solar and Fawn usually navigated by staying close and silent. Lily, with a knot of her friends, blocked their way near a staircase. "Look, it's the little woodland creature and her dark knight," Lily sneered, her friends snickering on cue. Fawn, holding Solar's hand, squeezed it tightly. She knew to remain quiet, to not give Lily any ammunition. Lily, however, was past the point of casual insults. She stepped forward and shoved Fawn hard in the chest. Fawn stumbled backward, her long hair flying, losing her footing on the top step. For a terrifying, heart-stopping moment, it seemed she would tumble all the way down the long flight of stairs. But Solar was faster. He released her hand, twisting his body to catch her. With a fierce grunt, he wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her back against his chest and away from the edge. He set her safely on her feet, his body still acting as a protective barrier. Fawn, breathless and shaken, felt the hot rush of panic dissipate, replaced by a deep, simmering anger. She had never seen Solar's eyes so dark, his face so devoid of all warmth. Before Fawn could even register what was happening, Solar broke away from her. His romantic goth aesthetic, usually a symbol of quiet rebellion, was now a frightening testament to his fury. He moved with a speed Fawn had never seen before, closing the distance between himself and Lily in an instant. The hallway, which moments before had been full of noise and chatter, fell into a stunned silence. He grabbed the front of Lily's shirt, not hard enough to hurt her, but with an intensity that clearly communicated the threat. "Don't you ever," he said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that cut through the silence like a knife, "touch her again." Lily's bravado crumbled instantly, replaced by a panicked terror. Her friends, who had been egging her on, now took a few steps back, suddenly frightened by the intensity of Solar's controlled rage. The school principal, alerted by the sudden commotion, arrived at that moment. The principal took in the scene: the pale and terrified Lily, the white-faced Fawn being comforted by a group of sympathetic students, and Solar, his hand still clutched in Lily's shirt, his posture radiating a silent and powerful threat. Solar was suspended for three days for the physical altercation, despite Lily's claims that he had attacked her without provocation. Fawn stood by his side, telling the principal exactly what had happened. Lily was given a stern warning, but no further action was taken. During his suspension, Solar was uncharacteristically quiet. He was filled with a familiar sense of shame, the ingrained belief that he was a disappointment, a problem. Fawn, however, refused to let him retreat into his silence. She brought him his favorite comfort food and watched old movies with him, but mostly, she simply talked. "You saved me," she said one evening, wrapped up with him on her cottage couch. "You were my hero." Solar shook his head, his deep red hair a stark contrast to the soft, floral throw blanket. "I shouldn't have lost control." "You didn't," she insisted, her voice soft but firm. "You protected me. What you did wasn't about violence. It was about love. You were protecting me, and I'm not ashamed of that. I'm proud of you." It was a slow healing process. Solar was still a quiet and introspective person, but now, with Fawn's unwavering support, he was beginning to trust that his anger could be a shield, not a weapon. He learned that protecting those he loved wasn't a bad thing, and Fawn, in turn, learned that her quiet, gentle love was a powerful force, one that could help the sun find its warmth again, even after a storm.
