Solar and Fawn part 6

E
Solar sat in the corner of Fawn's room, a shadow cast by the vibrant, life-filled decor. The cottagecore room, once a source of comfort, now felt like a spotlight exposing his own darkness. After the confrontation with Lily, Fawn had been his rock, her steady presence a comfort against the storm of the outside world. But in his mind, he had failed. He'd lost his temper, been suspended, and caused Fawn more trouble. He was convinced that every problem, every dark thought, was because of him. He started pulling away, subtly at first. When Fawn would share her worries about school, he would instantly turn it into a self-critique. "I should have handled Lily better," he'd mutter, his gaze fixed on his hands. "Then you wouldn't have to worry about this." When Fawn struggled with her own anxiety, he would take on the emotional burden, believing it was his duty to "fix" her happiness. The more he internalized their struggles, the more his mental health deteriorated. His iconic goth style grew more withdrawn, his vibrant red hair seemed to lose its luster, and his quiet nature became a heavy silence. Fawn, with her keen eye for emotional nuance, saw the change. He wasn't just quiet; he was shutting down. His usual calm reassurance was replaced by a self-deprecating sorrow. One evening, after a particularly silent dinner, Fawn decided to confront him. "Solar," she began gently, joining him on the floor. "What's going on?" He shook his head, refusing to meet her eyes. "Nothing," he mumbled, the word laced with a familiar resignation. "It's not nothing," she insisted, her hand finding his. "You're punishing yourself for everything, aren't you? For Lily, for my worries... for everything." The dam broke, as it always did with her. "It's my fault, Fawn," he whispered, his voice cracking with the strain of holding it all in. "You're so bright and good, and I just bring darkness. I lost control. I make everything harder for you." Fawn held his hands, her own pale skin a warm comfort against his. "Listen to me, Solar," she said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "What Lily did, that was her fault. Not yours. You didn't cause her cruelty, and you absolutely didn't cause my anxieties. We have our own struggles, and we help each other through them. You don't take the hit for me, and I don't for you. We stand side-by-side." He looked at her then, his eyes filled with a raw, unspoken pain. "And you are not a burden," she continued, her voice softening, but not wavering. "Sharing your pain with me isn't a burden; it's a gift. It shows me you trust me. Don't push me away, Solar. I need to be here for you, just like you are for me". Later, Fawn helped him start a journal, a safe place for him to explore his feelings without immediately internalizing them. They also started scheduling "worry talks" where they would both share their struggles, using "I" statements to express how they felt instead of blaming each other. It was a slow process, but for the first time, Solar started to understand that his love for Fawn wasn't about shielding her from all the world's pain, but rather about walking through it together, hand in hand, a sun and a fawn, brave and steady.
