In the story, we're following three people, Grandma Gertrude, Elizabeth, and Mark, and the story is talking about how greed and taking stuff for yourself it doesn't just bother you, it doesn't just harm you, it harms everyone in your life, too, and it's not all about you. The grandmother is talking about this Great Goddess and how she blessed their farm, but Mark has alternative motives to steal coins from the shrine at night. Elizabeth symbolizes Purity and has nothing bad to put out into the world, while Mark shows a lack of care for others and just wants wealth.
