The Problems of the K-Pop Community and the KATSEYE Fandom Hello, first off, this document is opinion-based, it’s my perspective, not yours. First, we need to talk about the K-Pop community and how it affects KATSEYE. Right off the bat, is KATSEYE even K-Pop? KATSYE was formed through HYBE/Geffen Records’s survival show called “Dream Academy”, all of the contestants/KATSEYE trained under the K-Pop system, KATSEYE even performed on M Countdown, KCON, and MAMA, they also did relay dances, like a K-Pop group. But, they debuted in LA, California, not Seoul, Korea. And they only have one Korean member, which is Yoonchae. And they sing in English, not Korean. So, everyone in the K-Pop community are asking themselves, “are they K-Pop or no?”, that stirs up controversy and toxicity. So, everything KATSEYE does is either appropriation or disrespect. Now, let's talk about actual controversy, when KATSEYE dropped their teaser for “Gnarly”, everyone started seeing similarities to Aespa’s “Drama” with the scenery and people pointed out their clothing looked too similar to BLACKPINK’s “Shut Down” and Jisoo’s “Earthquake”, look, just because other groups use the same concept does not mean they’re copying them, and then, their fans fought back. Eyekons were clapping back at the people defending Aespa, and well, Aespa fans were making racist comments towards Manon and Lara, and someone reported them for "inappropriate dance moves”, and then KATSEYE started fighting back. In western pop, that would be seen as them standing up for themselves, being confident, but in K-Pop that’s basically self-sabotage. K-Pop idols usually make an apology video, bowing, and staying silent. The company will handle everything, in K-Pop you need to sustain an untouchable image no matter what. You don’t clap back, nor engage. And this is how KATSEYE gets stuck in the mud, they’re trained like K-Pop idols, marketed like K-Pop idols, but they’re not Korean. They didn’t grow up in that culture. They’re American, Swiss, and Filipino. They come from cultures where standing up for yourself is normal, so when they respond to hate, they usually clap back like how they would do it in their countries. The K-Pop community sees it as unprofessional. Now, since I finished this, we need to talk about the choreo, so, in both music videos “Gabriela” and “Gnarly”, the choreo is “suggestive” and “weird” people get weirded out by that since Yoonchae was only 17 when those songs released, sigh, Yoonchae was 17, no, not 12, why do people have to treat Yoonchae like a freaking baby? Just because the outfits and choreo are “suggestive” doesn’t mean it’s inappropriate, for me, KATSEYE is expressive with their outfits and choreo, not sexualizing it. HYBE and KATSEYE didn’t respond to the fans' concerns, which made fans even more mad. This is where the K-Pop industry should be protecting these girls, but they didn’t. Everything is confusing, KATSEYE gets pushed to a west audience, which changes expectations, but they also get marketed to the K-Pop industry since they come from HYBE. in the BBC interview, one of KATSEYE’s members’ said that all the hate comments “terrorizes the mind” and Lara said that someone filed a false report trying to get her in trouble with immigration authorities, which shows this isn't casual hate, these are real attempts to damage their lives. The sad part of this is that half of the hate comments come from the K-Pop community, the same community that always talks about being anti-bullying and inclusive. It’s like a love-hate relationship. The K-Pop community doesn’t know what to do, either make their lives a living hell or support them, so they do both. And HYBE isn’t safe in all this. Pop Star Academy is very controversial, one of the members allegedly in an interview said that they watched it and they will never do so again. The trainees never knew this was a survival show, they thought they were simply training. The series showed conflicts between the trainees and accusations towards Manon. This made KATSEYE get hate even before they debuted. Whether you label them K-Pop or not, it shows how the system can work globally, but if the environment around them continues like this, no future global group will want to deal with such hostile criticism. The members are real people, not just machines that dance and sing, they have feelings, they’re young and haven’t experienced stuff like this, they’re dealing with constant hate, anxiety, fear, and pressure. Manon has been accused of all kinds of things based on anonymous posts, Lara said social media has been overwhelming ever since the documentary. This obsession with policing artists and groups has gone too far. Eyekons need to build a healthier community. Toxic stan behaviour should not be tolerated. If you are an Eyekon and compare the members constantly and say bad stuff about them, you’re not being a good fan, the members get judged with that. If we don't fix these problems, other groups with similar concepts are going to deal with this. So, please, stop spreading hate toward these girls. Bye and thank you for reading this.
