I believe this jellyfish was originally created by @bortilla on YouTube. I do not intend to appear like I'm claiming ownership of this design; I'm simply creating a textorial for anyone who would prefer one over a video tutorial. If you want to see a video tutorial, check out these links: - Part 1 - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/p9j532Kt_Ec - Part 2 - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2bpw0LSZpXY This is an intermediate project. You won't need any advanced techniques to make this, but it takes quite a bit of time and supplies and it will be easier if you're already familiar with basic bead weaving. Use what you have on hand, but I recommend: - 0.8–1.5mm cloth-covered elastic string - Yarn needle This tutorial was requested by @dead_p3rs0n on the forum! Feel free to reach out to me for other tutorial requests! :) NOTICE: All the images are currently broken. I'm trying to fix this.
Step 1
First, you will make the cap. The cap starts with a standard 2D star. Skip to Step 3 if you don't need a tutorial for the star. Start with 10 beads, then tie 2–3 times. Pass through 1–2 beads so that the knot is inside a bead. I prefer to leave the tail, then trim and hide it inside some neighboring beads when I'm done. Leaving some of the tail helps assure that the knot won't come undone. Remember to keep pulling tightly as you're making the cap.
Step 2
Add 3 beads, then skip one bead and pass the second bead. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through the next 3 beads. You should be exiting the next point of the star.
Step 3
Add 5 beads, then pass through the next point. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through the next point, then the next 3 beads. You will continue to add rows in this way while making the cap.
Step 4
Add 7 beads, then pass through the next point. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through the next point, then the next 4 beads.
Step 5
Add 9 beads, then pass through the next point. If you're having trouble finding the point, count upwards on both sides of a section until you find the bead in the middle. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through the point, then the next 5 beads.
Step 6
Add 11 beads, then pass through the next point. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through the point, then the next 6 beads.
Step 7
Add another row of 11 beads, then pass through the next point. Repeat all the way around. When adding the last set of beads, pass through: 1. the next point 2. the next 11 beads 3. the point after those 11 beads
Step 8
Now, you will tie off the cap. Pass downwards through the next 6 beads. Go left if your string is coming out of the left side, and vice versa. Your string should be exiting one of the points that you added in Step 5.
Step 9
Locate the string in between the bead you're exiting and the next bead. Make a loop by passing underneath that string. Then, put the end of your string through the loop and pull. Repeat 1–2 times. When I make the first knot, I like to put my finger through the loop so that I can keep the tension on the string tight. Any subsequent knots won't change the tension, so you only have to do this once.
Step 10
Now, you will make the arms of the jellyfish. Locate the first 10 beads you started with. You can use the 5 innermost beads (the ones circled in this image) or the 5 outermost beads to make the arms. Choose a bead, then pass your string through it. Make sure both ends are about the same length.
Step 11
Pick up 1 bead. Insert both ends of the string through opposite sides of the bead. The bead's holes must be horizontal.
Step 12
Pull both ends of your string outwards.
Step 13
Continue adding beads. To tighten the rows, grab both ends of the string with one hand, pull towards yourself, then use your other hand to slide the beads upwards. You can add as many or as few beads as you want. The original creator used 47, 43, 40, 26, and 20 beads for hers, so that's what I used for the one that I made in these pictures.
Step 14
When you're done making the arm, tie a double or triple knot. You can add more knots if you want.
Step 15
If you'd like to hide the knot, nudge the knot over to the side of your last bead with your thumb, then push the knot inside the hole. I used the eye of my yarn needle to do this. I also cut the tail very short so that it wouldn't stick out of the sides, but be careful not to cut too close to the knot or else you risk it coming undone.
Step 16
Keep making arms until you have 5 of them.
Step 17
If you want a more bell-shaped cap, hold the jellyfish by the arms with one hand, then use your other hand to gently tug the cap downwards. Keep in mind that the cap will flatten pretty often unless you hang the jellyfish from something.
That concludes this tutorial! Feel free to reach out to me on the forums or on the Kandi Pad Discord server if you have questions! If you want straighter, less time-consuming arms for your jellyfish, you can instead make them the same way you would on a standard 3D jellyfish. I've made a tutorial for that as well if you'd like one: https://kandipad.com/kandi-tutorials/3d-jellyfish-tutorial-3971447
